No one likes getting on their hands and knees to scrub bathroom grout week after week. If you want a more low-maintenance bathroom, remodel projects can help you reach your goals (and enjoy more of your free time). Here’s what we suggest if you’re ready to invest in a bathroom that’s easier to care for — and easier to enjoy!
Go for Modern Custom Tile
Tile doesn’t have to mean scrubbing grout. In fact, today’s modern custom tile is not only beautiful, it’s also much easier to clean and maintain. Here’s why we recommend custom tile as part of remodeling for a low-maintenance bathroom.
- We use tile made with special coatings and sealants that make your finished shower, bathroom flooring, or tile backsplash much more grime-resistant and easier to clean. [Porcelain and similar materials are less porous, so they naturally resist stains and moisture, even before these finishes are applied.]
- Shower and bathroom designs with larger tile sizes mean fewer grout lines. Fewer grout lines mean less scrubbing: there’s less surface area for dirt and grime to get trapped between tiles.
- Smooth tile finishes are easier to clean than bathroom or shower flooring, but you may still want to use textured ones in some areas for safety.
Maximize Space
Especially if you have a smaller bathroom, any improvements you can make to make the most of your space will make the entire bathroom more low-maintenance. Some of our favorite ways to maximize space (and make a bathroom seem as large as possible) include:
- Remove any unnecessary “nooks”. Some older bathrooms have “nooks” with small walls around the toilet or shower area. Removing these and switching to a more open bathroom floor plan is a great way to use your limited space, because it gives you more space to work with.
- Install improved lighting. Improving the placement and quality of the lighting to make natural light the star can make a small bathroom feel less “boxed in”. Lighting upgrades can also improve the reflectivity of the room, which is part of what makes rooms with a lot of natural lighting look bigger.
- New mirrors and vanities: Custom mirror and vanity setups for smaller bathrooms give you the opportunity to incorporate strategic storage. That gives you more space to move in and less to clean around, making cleaning and upkeep easier.
Replace Old Fixtures and Features
If your bathroom fixtures (tub, sink, toilet) and features are already outdated, they’re probably already causing maintenance headaches. Updating them as part of your bathroom remodeling means less long-term maintenance, especially if you opt for energy-efficient bathroom fixtures and lighting design that won’t demand as much from your plumbing or electrical systems.
